The starting point
Slow mornings. A different city tomorrow.
Build your trip around the places you actually want to spend time. Lisbon and Sintra work together; Porto and the Algarve usually deserve their own overnight stays rather than a rushed day-trip from Lisbon.
When to go
Choose the trade-off that suits your trip. These are planning patterns, not a weather forecast.
| When | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| April–June | City walks, gardens and a flexible Lisbon–Porto trip. | Reserve popular palace visits; weather still varies. |
| July–August | Long days and beach time. | Heat, busier resorts and more advance planning. |
| September–October | A mix of cities and the coast. | Shorter days; check seasonal coastal services. |
| November–March | Museums, city breaks and quieter streets. | Rainy spells and fewer beach activities. |
Choose a base that makes the days easier.
Pick your neighbourhood before your hotel. Compare the exact location, transit access, luggage route and cancellation terms. This is area guidance, not a hotel review or live booking quote.
Baixa / Avenida, Lisbon
First city break and convenient transit.
Check the exact street for noise and step-free access.
Alfama, Lisbon
Old-town walks and a neighbourhood atmosphere.
Hills, steps and cobbles can complicate luggage.
Aliados / Bolhão, Porto
A separate northern-city stay.
Choose a base near transit; riverfront slopes are steeper.
Lagos / Tavira, Algarve
A slower coastal block.
Check transport to your chosen beaches before booking.
Arrive with a plan. Leave room for delays.
- Confirm whether you land at Lisbon (LIS), Porto (OPO) or Faro (FAO); choose your base accordingly.
- For Lisbon, consult the airport and Metro Lisboa for the red-line route and current hours. Don’t assume late-night transit is available.
- Save the accommodation address offline. With heavy luggage, compare step-free access with a licensed taxi or the airport’s signed ride-hail pickup.
Download the accommodation address and an offline map before your flight. Consult the official links below for current hours, fares and access arrangements.
Getting around
- Check CP for intercity and Sintra services; reserve the appropriate train rather than assuming every service uses the same ticket.
- Treat Lisbon–Porto as a base change if you want an unhurried visit. Keep the Algarve as a separate coastal stay.
- For Sintra, plan the palace time slot and the final local connection before setting off.
A week, unhurried.
A starting structure, not a checklist. Adapt it to your arrival airport, interests and pace.
Settle into Lisbon. Walk one neighbourhood at a time; leave a morning for Belém.
Give Sintra a full day, including travel and palace access.
Move to Porto for a northern stay, or choose the Algarve instead. Don’t try to do both in the same short week.
Save the essentials. Then stay connected.
Maps, transport updates and messages are the useful basics. Install your apps on Wi-Fi, save key addresses offline and confirm your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable before choosing mobile data. A data-only plan does not include a local phone number or SMS.
